作为系列第七部作品（此前有三部曲加三部前传），《星球大战：原力觉醒》将故事设定在《星球大战3：武士复仇》之后的30年。《原力觉醒》英文名“The Force Awakens”和以往《星球大战》的片名保持了一致队形，同时“原力”作为星战的概念核心也是第一次出现在系列片名中。导演J·J为了让本片风格更贴近七八十年代的原版《星战》三部曲，不仅坚持使用35MM胶片拍摄，还大量使用模型和现场特效，甚至重新启用摩洛哥当地保存几乎完好的1977年《星球大战》片场，希望用实拍追求画面的复古感。
